Detroit is the perfect place for No Sudden Move due to the crime and unsafe environments in its neighborhoods. For this reason, many criminals have chosen it as a place to reside and grow their criminal empires. The film depicts the lives of young boys who travel to neighboring areas to spend their summer vacations. One of these boys is obsessed with martial arts and dreams of joining a karate academy where he can learn the skills needed to defend his neighborhood against any potential attack.
Despite being set in the not so distant past, No Sudden Move is an action and suspense movie filled with capacious plot twists. In the first few minutes of the film we see Steve (Denmark) and Bobby (Gary Johnson) going out on a date. They are attacked by two unidentified men who steal their car. The men manage to escape while Bobby is injured. A week later, when the boys return to the address where they had parked their car, they find that the alarm had been raised.
The mystery behind the robbery attempt deepens as the boys go to town and learn more about the man who orchestrated the scheme. Eventually, Steve gets a phone call from a man named Nelson (David Strathairn), who claims he wants to help the boys get back their stolen vehicle. Nelson tells Steve that the car, a red Mustang, has a problem and that it will need to be redlined. With this information the boys and Steve race to the local bank and bide their time. No Sudden Move then takes us from the suburbs to Detroit, where the movie clearly utilizes Detroit as the backdrop for the events that unfold. After Steve gets the bad news, Bobby flies to be with him.
When they arrive, the boys learn that the police have already sealed off the area surrounding the crime and are preventing anyone from entering. This includes the boys who were just visiting. Bobby immediately sees the flaw in the plan, but because of his strained emotional connection, he does not argue with the police. Instead, he quietly goes inside and waits. While Bobby is apprehensive about going on a wild goose chase with no leads or end result, David manages to convince the police that there is a good chance that the redlined Mustang is carrying a message for the kids involved: "It's not moving because there's a message inside."
