Based on actual events, Breaking News in Yuba County follows the trial of Josephy Joves, who is charged with first-degree murder for the death of his ex-girlfriend, Kaylie Rollins. The two were good friends, and she had helped him get into broadcasting by providing him with a car. On the day of the trial, however, he had an argument with a client over the phone, which prompts the revelation that he had been seeing somebody else. The public defender assigned to his case did not present convincing arguments for bail, saying that he had only hired Joves because he thought it would be a good opportunity for him to increase his salary. In order to help Josephy Joves adjusts to life inside the facility, his former TV reporter sister takes him on a field trip to remember the good old days of their childhood. Along the way, she tells him about her own experience growing up in Yuba County, which helps him accept his new path as a crime reporter. Sadly, her efforts to bring her unexpected bad news: her sister's murder is traceable to a local illegal gunrunning ring run by her own cousin.
