Black Island (aversion) is a spooky German film that definitely makes you feel the chill from the Black Sea. In fact the title speaks for itself: Black Island is where you shiver with fear! If you have not yet seen it, give it a try! Directed by Antonia Villas-Boas, the film will most certainly make you wish that you had a camera ready all the time. The story is based on the novel "The Girl Who Played with Fish".
This German horror thriller appears suitably Gothic and moody, perfect for relaxing on a rather cold and stormy evening. Though it is not exactly "creepy", there is definitely a Gothic touch to this movie. However, the director and writer did not go out of their way to make this movie very scary. I find that both elements of a scene being scary are balanced in this movie. I am not sure when exactly that particular one will land onto online theaters.
Based on the novels by Ulrich Behl and starring Maria Bello, the movie begins with Maria Bello's character, Angelina Jolie (Carla Gavarini) going missing while on holiday. Her husband, Henrich (Martinsson) believes that she has met with a tragic death. Maria returns home only to find that she has been brutally murdered. Once the truth is revealed, a series of events takes place that leads to the tragic death of Maria and the rise of a serial killer.
Not a new angle for the series, the Black Island is a stand-alone fantasy movie that picks up after the events of the first film of the franchise. There are still plenty of twists and turns, but I think the director and writer hit upon a method that works really well. There are still some recognizable faces from the first film, such as Angelina Jolie, but they play out differently with the overall theme. In the second film, Angelina also gains a friend in the form of a mysterious dragon (voiced by Morgan Freeman), who learns something about her past and about herself in the process. That friend then helps the group to find the mythical island where the mythical creature resides, which leads to a truly fantastic final battle between the good guys and the evil forces.
I really liked the setting of Black Island. It is set in the near future on an island called Ilha de Queimada, which is located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Brazil. I won't give too much away, but basically, after many years of research by the Brazilian government, a giant satellite finds a huge chunk of land and falls into the water. The ocean itself is full of sharks and other dangerous creatures, and the group has to survive and find a way to survive before the creature swallows them all up. It is an action-packed movie that isn't afraid to have some romance develop between its characters.
The movie Black Island is a fun and entertaining video game adaptation. It doesn't have the unique setting that some other games have, but it is a fun and enjoyable video game nonetheless. Black Island can stand on its own for its interesting story and characters, but if you are looking for a game that you can play on its own without the need to wait for the next installment in the main series of Mass Effect or Final Fantasy, this game is perfect. That's why I recommend it to people who like to play video games with unique settings and themes.
