This film tells the story of an English queen during the sixteenth century. Lady Juliet is also known as the "Upper Queen", "the queen of the Arabs"the Queen of Jams". She was an accomplished poet, who was also a lover of literature and music. Lady Juliet is believed to have been a member of the Zouaves, a French army unit.
In an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, director Alan Taylor stated that he chose Diana Dyer to play Lady Juliet, because she would be more believable as an Arab woman, than a romantic English woman. Taylor felt that Dyer had a "sour romance to her". Dyer would later become famous as the "Black Widow" of the Russian theater.
