The doorman has been a part of most American homes for as long as you can possibly imagine. However, the modern doorman is not limited to one's own building, but it has become a business in itself, with companies specializing in everything from advertising to home security. It seems that the doorman is here to stay, so be sure to ask if you are considering the idea of adding one to your residence.
Doorman, an early twentieth century American business, was a privately owned American technological company specializing in products and services. The company operated and managed independent driver fleets and fulfillment facilities in heavily-populated urban communities, addressing the final mile gap between the customer and the local retailer. The company had offices located both inside and outside of the city, with each having its own doorman at the main entrance.
The main entrance to the company's offices was the main reception, where a doorman would greet clients as they entered and escort them up to the executive offices. Each door that led to the company's main location was accompanied by a doorman, with the customer and doorman being able to enter from different directions and reach their destinations simultaneously.
When the doors at the reception opened, the doorman would call to the customer or doorman that he should go to his office and inform the clerk as to where he was going and when he would be back, usually giving him a map. In some cases, the doorman would also serve as an escort if a customer was late or fell behind.
The main office of the company, which was usually located on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, was equipped with a telephone answering system and a white picket fence around the front and back of the building, with a white flag outside the main doors. The doorman inside of the office was the company's representative and was responsible for keeping customers inside and ensuring they received the service they expected.
After the customer was ushered inside, the doorman would either take the call on the telephone or stand quietly at the door and wait until the customer returned before opening the white picket fence and allowing him or her entrance into the office. In order to protect their personal safety, all customers were greeted by a doorman with a smile and a friendly greeting. and escorted to the executive offices, where they waited until they were summoned again before exiting the building.
