Around 9:30 the morning on October 5th, 1892 three members of the Dalton Gang (Clymex, Blocket, Grat) traveled to the small town of Coffeyville in western Kansas. Their goal was to attain financial independence & make outlaw history by robbing two more banks. The group consisted of eighteen men. The men set out with Tom Mangold in the driver's seat. There were to be no pre-planned stops and the drivers never made it to the actual destination.
They pulled up behind a bank on the way to the robbery. They would have been in a great position to take the money from the teller if the guard had not tried to stop them. Two men in the bank saw them and called out to them. A gun battle broke out. Blocket fired her pistol several times but missed the men. Bill Power fired his gun at point blank range, hitting Emmett Dalton in the leg. His bullet hit the floor and bounced back several feet, allowing him to rush over and pick up his gun.
The driver of the getaway car started to drive away, but Tom Mangold, the man in the passenger seat, got out of the car and confronted the driver. When the man fled the scene, Tom fired two or three rounds into the back of the getaway car. The police caught the driver and the passengers. It took twenty-four hours before they got to the jail where Tom was held overnight. He was charged with felony theft, felony assault, conspiracy and robbery.
Because the story is so unbelievable and there were no real plans for the escape, the Dalton Gang got away and escaped. One of the suspects, Cosmo, confessed to thirty-two different murders. However, a month later, he changed his confession and said that he had only planned to escape and make it to Canada. This made the movie even more unbelievable. However, the film did end with some information about what exactly happened to the Dalton Gang while they were in prison.
It was also revealed that Tom Mangold planned the escape himself and used the prison guard as a go-between. There were other escape attempts by the group, but they would be unsuccessful. The story also says that the Dalton Gang planned to escape during the trial of Tom Mangold but they were stopped short of time when a guard killed Tom Mangold. The movie ends with a message that reads "vengeance will be taken."
The movie "The Dalton Gang" is not only one of the best prison movie ever made, but it is also considered to be a classic. It tells the story of a group of criminals who escape from a prison, which is actually what happened in real life. The movie is very gritty and a lot of action takes place. It's worth seeing, especially if you like action movies.
