The death of a woman's love is like the sudden curtains of darkness that totally envelop a relationship. A heartbreaking home delivery leaves an enduring woman grappling for the deep emotional hurt, alone with her devastated husband and small family without any source of solace. A mother's anguish at having lost her own child unexpectedly to death also serves as a touchstone for understanding the pain of losing a loved one: "How could this happen? This is such a perfect time...to have you back."
Pieces of a Woman follows the story of Angelina Jolie as she reunites with her long lost daughter. Although both women have suffered loss, the question is-how do they move forward after such a devastating experience? The film starts with Jolie's character pregnant with her first child while in a mid-air collision. Afterward, Angelina receives a painful shape that changes her life forever. She is determined to get her life back together and reunite with her daughter; however, she must navigate the complicated emotions of loss, while trying to navigate her personal grief over the death of her daughter.
Although the first few minutes may seem slow and boring, the plot develops gradually and builds momentum. The screenplay is adept at weaving various plot strands together so as to build dramatic tension. The acting performances are convincing, especially from the star herself, who plays the role of the late wife of a man she's just come to grips with the fact that he's having an affair with. In many ways, the movie mirrors the life of a modern day wife and mother; the midwife or labeouf is always the center of attention in the scene as she tends to the young daughter and labeouf's character falls deeper in love. In essence, the movie is about motherhood and its various stages-the most basic of human contact and the most difficult to establish and nurture.
This movie isn't just about the loss of a loved one but also the grief that come with not properly accepting and honoring the loss. As pieces of a woman are reunited and remade through the efforts of the characters, these pieces begin to fit together and make a whole woman. It's interesting to observe the different stages that a woman goes through when her life is touched by tragedy, whether the loss comes from a natural disaster or a sexual assault. These stages are then represented through different women's reactions.
Although the movie focuses on the relationship between the adult woman and her daughter, it's the story of the woman's search for meaning and the search for love that draws the viewer. Pieces of a Woman tells the story of a single mother who accepts the tragic news that her daughter has lost her own love and begins to piece together her life and the lives of her daughter and other children through the discovery of the lost pieces of her life. It's a very moving movie that makes the viewer think about the different things we lose when we reach the end of our tether. The movie ends with a single shot of a happily ever after set against the blue sky and the words, "Welcome to the World of the Fathers."
The movie Pieces of a Woman reminds us that even though we're women, we're often not given that "credit" for the good things in our lives, like being the nurturing single mom who raised the child while working hard to support herself and keeping the household running smoothly. Through the plot of the movie, we're allowed to peek inside the mind of a midwife who's willing to risk her reputation in order to help a young woman whose mother refuses to see the value of proper childbirth education for her daughter. If you're a single mother and looking for a new movie to watch, look no further than Pieces of a Woman. It's an insightful, emotionally driven film that leaves you rooting for the happily ever after.
