Ma Rainey's Black Bottom tells the story of a young woman who becomes a teenage girl at the center of a plot that reaches all the way back to pre-war America. The movie is directed by George C. Wolfe and based on the book of the same title by August Wilson. The movie is a fun and entertaining film from start to finish and many people have commented how much they enjoyed the movie. Some people even said it was very realistic, and that it accurately depicted the life that Ma Rainey (Rooney Mara) leads through her teenage years.
The movie begins in 1920s Chicago and follows the story of two young girls as they head to the closing night of a popular club. At this closing the nightclub is being threatened by what seems like an endless amount of drunkiders. Two bouncers, identified only as "Butch" (Kenny Johnson) and "Chase" (full) appear out of nowhere and begin to assault the girls. After nearly getting beaten to a pulp, the two girls manage to fend off the attackers long enough for the police to arrive in time to break up the fight.
The movie then cuts to a few minutes later as Rainey, bleeding profusely from a near-fatal beat down, is tended to by a young, wheelchair bound maid. This scene plays out exactly how it actually happened to Rainey. This Maid later reveals to Rainey that she was the one who helped get her pregnant and helped her secure herself and her baby in the home she built after losing her parents at a young age. The movie follows the story of Rainey as she attempts to start over following the end of her marriage to Charday. A chance meeting with her old friend, Chadwick (eds), leads her down a new path where she must uncover the truth about her past and the present. In addition to starring as Rainey, who also has a supporting role as Charday, the movie also includes Michael Chiklis as "Chase", and Shea Whittaker as Libby. Additionally, Rainey will be seen alongside Tyne Parks in the upcoming movie "The Graduate" as well.
If anything can be said about the plot of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, it would have to be that it follows the tale of a woman who seemingly just got married to a man who wants to get out of her marriage as quickly as possible and is looking for any means he can find to do so. The movie begins in a small rural town called Charday, where Rainey's good friend Libby (ggie Tovar) lives. It's there that they meet and form a relationship after which both women learn that they are actually lovers. However, when Charday's son begins to run away from home, Rainey sets out to find him, and the two spend the next several months trying to track down their son.
The show ends with the discovery that Charday is hiding a stash of gold coins in the back of his van. Before being able to get his hands on them, however, Charday has his henchman kill Rainey and his friend Libby. He then drives off with their bodies and leaves behind a note, telling his henchmen to take care of anyone they can while he goes ahead with his gold. Since Charday is from Chicago, it's expected that at least one of his henchmen will know where the money came from that took so long to come out of the vault. As it turns out, though, these men are not interested in simply taking the money but want to help out in some way, so the "Black Bottom" storyline continues.
