In the first episode of the American version of "House of Cards", it was revealed that Toby has an unusual and apparently untrustworthy ability to know what people are feeling, and what they're thinking. Later on, in an off-camera interview with Paul, he comments that Toby has a "sense of what's going on."
It should be said at this point that I found the "Sense of What's Going On" subplot involving Toby to be rather interesting. It wasn't particularly deep or complex, but it was a nice little diversion from the main story. I suppose I am generally turned off by TV drama in general, as they tend to gravitate toward deep characters and situations and such.
So, it was with interest to see the scene that Toby, played by Kevin Spacey, uses his ability to predict which way Claire will vote in the upcoming election, to try and persuade her to stay on the TV show. Although in the end, he is unsuccessful, he is able to influence Claire, who in turn, decides to stay on the show.
What was Toby's angle? Was it because he knew she would betray the program to go back to work? Or, was it because he felt that the two of them are a good match for each other, and that they will get along perfectly?
All of which could be argued, depending on what your point of view is on whether to trust or not trust people with your life. However, it does seem pretty clear that Toby is using his intuitive ability and using it carefully and only when necessary.
Online psychics use similar methods of influence, and as online psychics, they can't be prosecuted, and therefore you would have to wonder if Toby is using this same ability to win his online sales leads. Indeed, I know people who use online psychics. And some of them use their intuition too.
It is a trait of human beings to use our intuition and feel for things to see things out. Some people even feel that they can read someone's aura, or to be more precise, they can read the thoughts that the person is having. This ability is used for very good reasons in crime dramas, as a way of identifying the wrong doer of a crime.
However, it might be something like to use a different method in order to catch the wrong doer. In this case, the person might use his or her intuition to predict the impending outcome of a situation before it happens, but not use it to influence the outcome of the situation.
