It is amazing that when the author of I Used to Go There is a book about young people in high school and college, there are references to the famous band Nirvana. After being asked to talk at a high school reunion, the writer realizes how deep into the minds of the people she's speaking to her really is. She spends some time following the people she's talking to through college and into adulthood as well.
The book is filled with interesting information about how the author was able to write the book without feeling stuck, where she got it from and what her goal with it was. She even shares her opinions about many of the events, personalities and issues of her subjects. One example of this is a description of a girl who was picked on as a "hater," the fact that a student's mother told her daughter to "be a cheerleader," and how it influenced her behavior and attitudes.
Throughout the book, the author shares how much she loves high school and college. She even describes her high school friends and their lives, which are nice to see. I found myself feeling like I've known these people all my life, especially when the author talked about all the people in her own life who influenced her. I also found myself getting really emotional at times throughout the book, as if I was experiencing things through the eyes of another person.
At the book's conclusion, I felt like I had learned something about my childhood. It seemed like I had learned more about myself and my relationships in that period of time. I liked the book because it gave me something to relate to in my current and future relationships, whether they're romantic or platonic.
