Of all the Disney movies, Fantasy Island is probably the most famous. Fantasy Island came out during the heyday of the Disney animation and was the first movie to be made with fully computer generated graphics. With computer graphics comes an increase in the length of the characters and their physical characteristics.
The movie is set in the "Land of the Midnight Sun" and is called Fantasy Island, but it really couldn't be called a real island. The land of Fantasy Island is described as being floating in the air. In the film it appears as though there are two islands: one is occupied by humans and one is occupied by cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse. There is an underground tunnel and people can easily move between the two sides.
The story is told by Dr. Fred Dutton, a physician who works at the land of Fantasy Island. He is a kind of cranky old man who takes pleasure in performing "fatal experiments". One day he wakes up and finds himself on a strange island filled with all sorts of crazy characters and wonders. Unfortunately, Dr. Dutton's love life doesn't fare much better. He falls in love with a magic rose that magically summons the blue fairies that live on the island.
Carl is a helpful character, playing the part of an island shaman. He makes many of the Island's recipes and keeps a tea cabinet full of these mysterious potions. He is a cross between both a caretaker and a general of an army.
Johan is the "Prince of the Land". He also does odd jobs like cleaning and cooking. He is often needed by Johan when problems arise. The four main characters of the film are:
There are other characters that appear briefly. Some of them were only mentioned but they're the most important. They include:
Many of the musical numbers in the film are from other Disney movies. Others were based on Walt Disney's own personal songs. While some of the songs are originals, others are actually re-recordings of traditional songs.
Fantasy Island has had many follow-ups and is still very popular. If you want to see a favorite Disney movie but aren't really sure where to go to see it, consider giving Fantasy Island a try.
